Our old-fashioned work ethic instilled by our founder, Giovanni Biagioni, continues to be the backbone of our company to this day. GMF Contractors was founded by Giovanni, Emilio and Frank Biagioni in 1969 – with the GMF initials coming from each of their names.
GMF initiated as a sand cartage company, with the first business venture being the lease of a small sandpit in Craigie (then known as Cockman Road – now home to St. Luke’s School). Leasing this sandpit allowed the team to supply filling sand, brickies and plasterers. This stage especially required many hard, long hours from the team as their workload grew substantially. As our name and relationship with industry leaders grew, so did our commitment to delivering earthworks. GMF purchased a sand pit in Jandakot to account for the increase in demand of supplies.
After years of working on site alongside GMF’s founders, second generation Director Albert Biagioni commenced as a manager of GMF. Albert took it upon himself to begin tendering and quoting for multiple large projects across the metropolitan area and thanks to his hard work and commitment, GMF began being awarded commercial tenders. At this stage of operations, GMF Contractors was running on three loaders, a compactor truck and a GMC.
Laurence Biagioni commenced at GMF as owner and operator of a 6-wheel tipper. Three years later, Laurence undertook a managerial position and ran all of GMF’s operations while Albert was on leave. Upon his return, Laurence stayed on as Supervisor and with the fast paced growth of GMF quickly became Manager.
Over the years GMF’s capabilities significantly expanded and second generation Directors, Albert and Laurence Biagioni, developed GMF from a two-machine operation into a smooth running organisation, fuelled by hard work and cutting edge technology. GMF successfully completed their biggest project yet – the Karrinyup Shopping Centre upgrade with Multiplex. This project was to be the first of many complete carpark projects, involving the successful delivery of earthworks, roads and carpark works.
GMF’s first significant project within the Perth CBD took place – the multi-faceted earthworks for construction of the Woodside Tower on St George’s Terrace. This was to be the first of many iconic earthworks projects undertaken by GMF within the Perth metropolitan area and the Kings Park footpath works were completed shortly after. Invested in meeting the growing requirements of these projects for our clients, GMF purchased their first track excavator and began expanding resources.
Accounting for the growth of GMF, the entire business made the move from a 900 square metre property in Osborne Park to the 9000 square metre multi-operational Head Office in Malaga. GMF grew into of a large, hardworking unit, home to multiple integrated earthworks services and thoroughly invested in our clients’ projects.
General Manager, Andrew Ando initially joined GMF as a labourer in 2005, operating a 6-wheel-tipper. Through his dedication and hard work on site, he has moved through the business in various roles from site through to office based operations management and now, General Manager. Andrew instilled his ambitious nature into the company's operations.
Thanks to the commitment of our team, GMF collectively grew into a reputable industry leader in Perth. In 2016 our team successfully completed a large portfolio of unique projects, including the completion of works at the Mundaring Water Treatment Plant, Crown Towers and Perth Stadium.
The GMF Contractors Civil Division was born in 2017 with Anthony Tsalikis appointed Civil Manager. Under Anthony's leadership, GMF branched out and began to take on both Construction and Civil projects. The addition of a new division meant the expansion of skillsets from focusing strictly on bulk earthworks to engaging in more civil related projects.
In 2019 GMF won the tender for our biggest construction project, the remodelling and expansion of Karrinyup shopping centre. We had to bulk excavate around 270000m3 of limestone and sand and this would be the second time GMF was tasked with the remodelling of Karrinyup, as we did the original expansion back in 1996
More than 50 years later, GMF Contractors is still fuelled by the old school work ethic instilled by our founders. Owned and operated by second and third generations, many of our team learnt first-hand from the expertise of generations before them. We believe that this distinct approach, along with the extensive experience and knowledge of our team, is what sets us apart from our competitors. The dedication and hard working attitude of our team is what allows us to continually deliver successful projects and sustain strong relationships with our clients. We pride ourselves on our renowned reputation within the industry and aim to uphold and exceed this on each project we undertake.
In 2024 our Civil department still lead by Anthony Tsalikis, won GMF our biggest Civil and GMF Project to date, FDO – Catalpa. This Civil site encompasses around 750000m2 of land and will be a major holding ground for the importation of cars into Western Australia.
